KAYLEIGH GOH
Pavement ll - Chinese Landscape

2020
City Debris on Slate Rock
10cm diameter (artwork) | 15 x 15cm (framed)

Part of "Soft Whispers of the City, 2020", an online exhibition during Covid, this work by Goh immersed viewers in place-led painting installations within her Melbourne room.

Using fragments of pavements from her restricted 5km walks, Goh embraced the New Materialist concept—which suggests that non-human materials possess their own agency and capacity to influence humans. Through deep connection and reflection, she began listening to the 'whispers' of these materials—the internal bodily responses and emotions during her encounter with the materials.

This fascination transformed Goh's practice as she now views her role as a conductor, harmonising the diverse voices of the materials to create cohesive artworks. The culmination was her Master's graduation show, "A City Orchestra, 2021", a symphony of these materials forming a coherent installation.
