Waiting for the Day

2020
Acrylic on Linen
65 x 50 cm

From her 'Comfort Zone' series, Shen's Waiting for the Day depicts a scene of laundry hanging out to dry, captured at the end of the corridor for a floor of rental apartments. A striking yellow box outlines the scenery of high-rise buildings, emphasising the contrasting environments different individuals in the city experience at the same time.

Familiar yellow lines commonly seen in urban environments serve as a symbol of regulation, and a representation of the presence of our culture of conformity. Layering these lines with the colours of the golden hour and the structured forms of the city serves as a reminder of how the urban environment and the expectations from societal norms subconsciously deprive its inhabitants of expansions and possibility.
